Pamela Lindgren Design is involved in collaboration with Neuro sciences, Musicians, Smart textiles sciences in a project about enriched environment. “How can knowledge from basic research about effects of enriched environments on the healing of the brain lead to improved rehabilitation environments through explorative design methodology?” Basic research shows that the brains capacity to recover is significantly improved by physical activity, multi-sensory stimulation, an enriched environment and appropriate food. Clinical observations suggest that aesthetic and emotional stimulation may be equally important. Designers, architects and specialists from Högsbo Medical Rehabilitation Unit have therefore launched an interdisciplinary project aiming to re-design the rehabilitation environment at Neuro Högsbo, in a collaboration between Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sahlgrenska Academy, and School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg University. The experimental Design with Care project is continually documented and evaluated with parallel methods to gain a better understanding of the role of the designed environment. The design strategy implies a conscious and methodical approach to create attractive environments and products, true care for human wellbeing, participation and access. The project explores new forms of cooperation between design, architecture, art and medical science; forms that hopefully can produce leaps in our development of knowledge. The project is explorative and the design work is based on both scientific research and artistic experiments. The goal is to create an improved environment for neurologic rehabilitation and gain better knowledge about how environment and products affect wellbeing and the recovery of functions of a person who tries to restore his/her life after a brain damage.

Today’s high-tech level of living whit distinctive high-resolution images and manipulated nature, made me think of the mythic idea of the far east in the 18th century, the lacquer work, the Chinoiseries and the disciplined nature as in a bonsai tree.

My approach is to use today’s technique and reduce it into something that reminds of old craft techniques and methods, combined with today’s techniques.

By reducing the resolution of the images they become abstract, shape and contrast make the images more into a pattern. I have used the pattern and turned it into a digital drawing, which have been programmed into a machine that cuts out the images. In this way the low resolution images leaves a long lasting footprint of its appearing, a time document of today.

Movetto px4 is a mobile driver's seat, which meets the transport needs of disabled people. It can be defined as a hybrid between a manual- and an electric wheelchair.

In the work on this hybrid, we have considered the primary functions of an electric wheelchair: the raising, lowering and angling of the seat. Over and above these common functions, Movetto can be used as a passenger-seat or as a driver's seat in a specially adapted car.

Movetto offers a low seat level, which optimizes the wheelchair user person's position in relation to the car's construction. The wheelchair's total weight is 80 kg, which is the equivalent of half the weight of today's electric wheelchairs. Movetto has front-wheel drive, and is steered via the back wheel. This construction is advantageous for both the turning radius and the precision steering. The wheelchair turns on its own axel which means that the turning radius is zero. Larger tyres and greater height above the ground also improve the wheelchair's capacity for accessibility and it's ability to clear obstacles.

In working on finding the right character, feel and design-language, I have been inspired by the technology, construction and functions of this new electric wheelchair.

My point of departure for this project has been to find a new, modern expression for the electric wheelchair. I have worked on designing a wheelchair which communicates an active life-style. The work has also consisted of developing a cheaper, simpler and better-functioning construction.

In the design process I have studied the functions and questions which I myself have experienced as difficult to manage. I have benefitted from these experiences in my design in order to draw attention to functions and to optimize the ergonomics for the user, as well as to create an added value for the product.

This project is a collaboration between myself and the constructor Per Stjärnehag from Handikappteknik. The project has resulted in a full-scale first test prototype.

Balance a cup for everybody
The cup is conceived for a broader group of clients. People with fully functional hands and also people with disfunctional hands. The open handle is created to enlarge the grip area. The inside of the cup is bowl-shaped which makes it easy to drink.
